Important update for Alabama homeowners

Alabama recently passed House Bill 96, which increases the homestead exemption for certain residents. This change provides stronger protection for a portion of a person’s home from creditors.

Beginning June 1, 2026, the homestead exemption will increase to $56,400 for Alabama residents who are:

• Age 62 or older

• Individuals with disabilities

The new law also clarifies how the exemption is applied in bankruptcy cases and updates several related procedures in Alabama law.
